The UK has a longstanding history in pioneering nuclear technology. Today, nuclear power remains crucial to the UK’s energy security as well as our plans for energy independence, energy diversification, economic growth, job creation and technology advancement, while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and making the transition to a low carbon, affordable energy mix. Electricity generation from low carbon sources is an essential element of the transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and meeting our statutory targets for the sixth carbon budget (CB6).
