The Nuclear Innovation and Research Advisory Board (NIRAB) provide independent advice to the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). NIRAB has been working to address the question: - How does the UK deliver an AMR demonstrator to the timescales required, by early 2030’s? How can this be achieved using innovative methods while maximising UK content? NIRAB considered that the nuclear regulatory approval processes could be a rate determining step for delivery and this should be assessed to look at potential risk mitigation. NIRAB has undertaken a review of the statutory approval processes for new nuclear in the UK, and their applicability to Advanced Nuclear Technologies (ANTs). NIRAB has also considered cross-cutting areas that could also impact on the timelines for delivery, including design maturity, organisational capability, financing, supporting infrastructure and cross-regulatory boundary issues.
